Vanishing Labyrinths Tasting Journey
The banquet table laid out to mirror the topography of the islands…
The labyrinth festival included an event at the Old Town Inn, for those who wanted to join the celebrations but who might find the pilgrimage out to Giant’s Castle too difficult. As part of this event, culinary artists Poppy Litchfield and Anaïs Serres created the Vanishing Labyrinths Tasting Journey for us: a (fully vegan) food-scape inspired by the shapes of the islands for attendees to eat from through the evening.
This delicious cartography included foraged fennel, edible sesame sand, granite-like crackers, pea’s pudding, pickled samphire, fresh seaweed and agar pearls - making as much use of the locally available wild food on the islands as possible. They also designed bespoke cocktails - a “lost martini” with samphire tincture and a non alcoholic “found-elixir” on our labyrinth theme.
Fennel flowers added height and flavour…
The artists served event attendees from the laden feast table…
Sesame sand froths at the cracker-islands’ coasts, while agar pools resembling colossal jellyfish drift on a baking-paper sea….
Granite textures crackers mimic Scilly’s geology…
Frothing agar pearls bubble on the beach…
People of all generations embarked on the tasting journey together…
Edible seaweeds crowned the islands…
Everything was equally as delicious as it was beautiful.
Not only way this a beautiful, generous and creative offering to the islands, every single part of it was totally delicious! Coming together for food and music to celebrate Scilly’s labyrinth heritage was incredible special - thanks so all who came and feasted with us particular thanks to the incomparable Poppy and Anaïs who are a dream to work with and a treasure to know.
