Teän Roberts & Layan Harman are the artists behind the Scilly Labyrinth project
Teän Roberts and Layan Harman met in 2022 while they were both studying Contemporary Art Practice at the Royal College of Art in London. Teän grew up in Scilly and much of their work draws from Scillonian landscape and heritage. Layan grew up in South Devon, and moved to Scilly with Teän in April 2024. We both now live and work here on the islands.
We both share strong interests in landscape, folklore, mythmaking, and prehistory. We are both interested in a style of art that is collaborative, iniviting, and creates connections between diverse people, subjects, and disciplines.
We are we interested in Scilly’s labyrinths for many reasons. Some are historical- they represent a unique piece of heritage found nowhere else in Britian. Some are more cultural- we are interested in talking to people about them, finding out why people care about them, why they were created and maintained. Some are symbolic- the labyrinth is a very ancient symbol, and has many layers of meaning within it. We see the labyrinths as having vital lives of their own, cropping up here not by accident, shaping the Scillonian landscape and the people that traverse them.
We care deeply about stories, and all of these aspects form important parts of the story of labyrinths on Scilly, a story we aim to explore (from our own imperfect perspectives) with this project.
