Labyrinth Sharing Events
Over the last few months we have hosted a number of Labyrinth Sharing Events. We didn’t want to call these “talks” or “community consultations” because we wanted these to be informal exchanges of information. At these events we presented our research so far - into labyrinth lore in general and Scilly’s pebble maze heritage specifically - and welcomed input and ideas from our attendees as to their theories on the labyrinths.

Sharing event at the Old Town Inn, St Mary’s
At the in-person talks on St Mary’s, hosted back in April, we presented a range of options for restoring the maze at Giant’s Castle, based on our research so far. The results of this survey formed the basis for our plans for the restoration, as we wanted this to be undertaken in collaboration with the island community and informed by the preferences of local people.
Our event at the Seven Stones Inn on St Martin’s had more of a focus on the White Island Bar mazes, and informed the name choice for the new labyrinth we created at White Island Bar to align with the Summer Solstice sunrise. We had a beautiful, free-flowing conversation about the mazes and their history, as well as the different meanings that they hold for different people.

We also hosted an online Sharing Event to reach a winder audience of people who are interested in Scilly’s labyrinths but who are not based on the islands. This did inevitably take on the format of more of a talk, where we discussed our research and our plans for the Giant’s Castle site.
