Accessibility information for Giant’s Castle Maze

Giant’s Castle Maze is situated on the coast path beside Giant’s Castle Iron Age Hill Fort on the South Eastern coast of St Mary’s in the Isles of Scilly. The surrounding area of coastal heathland (mainly consisting of low heather with patches of gorse) is known as Salakee Down. Giant’s Castle is between the airport runway and Porth Hellick beach.

The best route to access the maze is to walk from the Eastern end of Old Town Beach. This is about a 1 kilometre walk along an uneven, winding coast path that is typical of the Isles of Scilly. There are some places where it is necessary to climb over small stones and styles in the path, and the path comes close to cliff edges at times, so utmost care is required. The path also crosses the edge of the airport runway, so walkers must pause when the alarm sounds. This is a frequently used path, so it is not overgrown with brambles. It is advisable to keep dogs on leads.

There is some on-road parking in Old Town, and the beach is on the Community Bus route, though this is not a particularly frequent service.

The closest toilet is the public loo, to the lefthand side of Old Town Cafe in Old Town: https://maps.app.goo.gl/QjFYdB6yNDi8TmLw7

When visiting the maze it is advisable to bring water to drink, weather-appropriate clothing (waterproofs, sun hats and suncream, etc) as the site is very open, and be sure to wear sensible footwear.
